Crisis in Democracy is a project developed in partnership with the UBC Centre for Study of Democratic Institutions, looking at the the trend of countries around the world moving away from democratic principles. We are researching and reporting on how some governments have embraced the notion of “illiberal” democracy, imposing policies that cut off and restrict civil rights.
Prominent thinkers will provide their perspective on illiberalism in their own countries, and will travel throughout their countries to speak with fellow citizens who support the move away from traditional democratic values. The final projects will open up discussions on how these movements influence political changes and are connected with the rise of left and right wing populism.
Our goal is to produce an edited book of essays, and to film the writers as they travel, for a multimedia documentary series.
