On July 6, 2008, a US military drone strike mistakenly hit a wedding party in a village of Deh Bala in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, killing 47 civilians including the bride. This was one of several such collateral-damage hellfire attacks on wedding parties. The so-called “war on terror” in Afghanistan and Iraq has resulted in numerous civilian casualties. This tentative project seeks to document the impact of unmanned aerial vehicles in modern warfare, building a website with data visualization and maps that provides an outline of wedding party deaths and related large-scale civilian casualties due to attacks taking place in Afghanistan. Additionally, a woodwind quintet piece will be composed, telling the story on one of these airstrikes, with each instrument of the quintet representing one aspect of the incident.
