Prof. Nancy Hermiston

Professor Hermiston is a distinguished opera singer, stage director, and educator whose career has taken her across Canada, the United States, and Europe. She has taught voice and directed productions at the Meistersinger Konservatorium in Nürnberg and at the University of Toronto’s Opera and Performance Divisions. In 1989, she founded Germany’s first women’s opera guild. A recipient of Opera Canada’s 2011 Rubie Award and UBC’s 2008 Dorothy Somerset Award, she is widely recognized for her artistic leadership. Her Opera Ensemble, established in 1995, has collaborated with the Vancouver Opera, the Vancouver Symphony, and numerous community partners, performing internationally and across Canada. UBC’s Opera Program received the 2011–12 Alfred Scow Award for enriching the student experience.

Angel founded the Art Canada Institute (ACI) in 2013 to democratize access to Canadian art for a diverse, twenty-first-century public, making high-quality, bilingual digital resources available to all regardless of location or prior knowledge. The ACI now offers open-source publications, a digital library, school art education programs, a fellowship program, and a weekly newsletter.
