Desmond Cole — Award-winning author, journalist, broadcaster, and activist
Mr. Cole’s activism has received national attention, specifically on the issues of police carding, racial discrimination, and dismantling systemic racism. Mr. Cole’s writing has appeared in the Toronto Star, Toronto Life, The Walrus, NOW Magazine, Ethnic Aisle, Torontoist, BuzzFeed, and the Ottawa Citizen. He also hosted a radio show on Newstalk 1010 from 2015 to 2020, and became the subject of a 2017 CBC Television documentary, The Skin We’re In, based on a 2015 Toronto Life cover story. In 2020, Mr. Cole was named one of CBC Books’ “Writers to Watch” for his first book, The Skin We’re In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power (2020) that became the bestselling Canadian book of the year, nominated for the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing, and winner of the Toronto Book Award.
