The 2024 Olympic Games are days away, and Paris is preparing to welcome the world. The Olympics are watched by millions, celebrated as peak human achievement, and recorded as history. But before athletes even arrive in the host city, an enormous urban transformation unfolds.

For the past year, we’ve been investigating what happens to host cities before, during, and after the games. We met with people who have been moved out to make way for the Olympics, activists who want an end to the games, and International Olympic Committee officials who champion the sporting event.

A review in The Financial Times calls State of Play an “illuminating and alarming” series that “reveals how the games can cause debt and disruption and displace vulnerable people.”
