We are living in a globally momentous, disruptive time. Whether it’s the geopolitical shake-up from conflicts in Europe, the Middle East, or by an unpredictable but powerful U.S. president… to momentous technological shifts via artificial intelligence… to the persistently ignored but existential dangers of climate change — things have never felt so dangerous.
And yet — at this very moment when facts and truth matter more than ever, newsrooms are falling apart from a toxic combination of broken business models destroyed by social media platforms plus the intimidation by increasingly authoritarian governments putting pressure on journalists.
This is why supporting the Global Reporting Centre is so critical at this time. The Centre’s focus on international reporting when media organizations are cutting back on world coverage is crucial — and in some cases with its stellar reporting: literally life-saving.
With just three weeks left in 2025, please consider a tax-deductible donation to the GRC to support our global journalism in 2026.
My first encounter with the GRC was years ago, when the Centre invited me to speak to journalism students about my time as a foreign correspondent in China. Since then, I’ve collaborated with them on diverse stories — from how marquee athletics events such as the Olympics allow countries to “sportswash,” to a look at military defense preparations by skittish Eastern European states against an expansionist Russia. This has often been done in collaboration with graduate students from the University of British Columbia’s journalism program.

The GRC not only covers important stories — it has been innovative in how it delivers the stories to audiences. At a time when the medium is changing so much, the work of its journalists in text, audio, video, social media, and new collaborations and modes of storytelling is the smart way to reach new audiences and underserved audiences.
Please consider supporting the Global Reporting Centre. Invest in these journalists, and invest in a better future.
