Speaker: Tanya Talaga, Award-winning journalist and author

An acclaimed storyteller and public speaker, Talaga is an investigative reporter for the Toronto Star, and has been nominated five times for the Michener Award in public service journalism. Her book Seven Fallen Feathers: Racism, Death and Hard Truths in a Northern City won the 2017 Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing, the 2018 RBC Taylor Prize for non-fiction, and the First Nation Communities Read: Young Adult/Adult Award. This book was named CBC’s Nonfiction Book of the Year and a Globe and Mail Top 100 Book. Talaga was the First Ojibway woman to deliver the Massey Lectures with an examination of the effects of colonization on Canada’s indigenous peoples and the legacy of residential schools. She was awarded the 2017 Atkinson Fellow in Public Policy by The Canadian Journalism Foundation.
